High Complexity Unit on Oncology
Inaugurated on May 13, 2015, the High Complexity in Oncology Unit (Unacon) Nossa Senhora de Fátima, of the Irmã Dulce Social Works (OSID), offers to the population free treatment for cancer, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy procedures, outpatient consultation and surgeries in the oncology field. Located on Avenida Luís Tarquínio (in front of the Dom Pedro Shelter), the complex has a structure that includes 1,700 square meters of built area, 11 offices, 21 beds and modern appliances to service around 4 thousand patients per month. In addition to inaugurating radiotherapy treatment in the Works, the unit made it possible to increase the number of chemotherapy services already available at the institution, contributing significantly to the reduction of waiting lines for these procedures in Bahia. Federal and state government resources, as well as society donations, could make possible to build and furnish the newest oncology center.
Unacon is another important chapter in the institution's history for the benefit of cancer patients, which began in February 2009, when Irma Dulce Social Services installed the Oncology Service, thus strengthening care for cancer patients in the State. That year, a population began to count on procedures like chemotherapy, surgeries in the oncological field, hospitalization, consultations and exams realizations, all 100% Unified Public Health System (SUS). Three years later, in 2012, this service gained an important boost with the inauguration of the Oncology Nursing. The service provided by OSID in the oncology area with its specific environments for the development of the activities and its multidisciplinary team has the solid proposal of humanize the care. An example is the Psychology, Social Work room, the meeting room and group activities. Highlight for the Beauty Room project - an exclusive environment for a self-esteem work of patients in order to prepare them for the changes that happen during cancer treatment.
