Rehabilitation of Facial Skull Anomalies Center
Inaugurated in 1998, the Center for Rehabilitation of Facial Skull Anomalies, known as “Centrinho”, is the second largest unit in the country in the recovery of cracks and is a reference of the Health’s Ministry in the care of patients from the North and Northeast states. The nucleus attends these anomalies, such as the cleft lip and the wolf's throat, a problem that affects about 261,000 people in Brazil, of whom 30,000 are from Bahia.
Skull facial anomalies cause physical damage that is reflected in the respiratory, auditory and digestive system, dentition and in the speech articulation, besides a strong psychological impact brought by the prejudice. This condition gets worse when anomalies are not treated in the first year of the patient's life.
Centrinho's multidisciplinary care - made by social workers, psychologists, dentists, pediatric dentists, speech therapists, otolaryngologists, nurses, anesthesiologists, plastic surgeons and oral and maxillofacial surgeons - invests in the integral recovery and in the self-esteem increase of the assisted public.
Partnership - For its maintenance, the “Centrinho” counts on the partnership of Smile Train. Smile Train is an international children's charity with a sustainable approach to a unique and solvable problem: Lip Cleft and Palate. Millions of children in developing countries coexist with the shame of fissures still unrecognized and most important: have difficulty eating, breathing and talking. Fissure repair surgery is simple and has an immediate transformation. Our sustainable model provides training local physicians in more than 85 developing countries by providing crack repair surgery in their communities free of charge.
We use the "teach a man to fish" model, with a focus on training local doctors to perform repairs of palate lip fissures in their communities. Doctors will then train other doctors, creating a long-term sustainable system. Patients will see their smile for the first time, parents will cry tears of joy, communities and lives will change forever.
Because of our efficiency and with the support of our donors and partners around the world, Smile Train has transformed the lives of more than 1 million children, giving them the power of a smile - performing approximately 340 surgeries per day and 127,000 every year.
